Excursion on Mount Teide
There is a giant watching over Tenerife, both fascinating and threatening, offering different and multicoloured shows, from the black lava accumulated along the centuries, to the snow that sometimes decorates its peak. We are talking about Mount Teide, among one of the highest volcanoes in the world and the highest peak in Spain, situated in the centre of the island. If you look at it from a distance, your soul will be filled with enthusiastic impressions. Going on an excursion on foot as far as its peak can be a unique and unforgettable experience.
There are many excursions to choose from according to your preparation: from the most comfortable to the most challenging, to those which include a walk as far as the highest peak in Spain.
Here you will find some options:
- Itinerary along the crater, Telesforo Bravo, pathway number 10. If you choose this itinerary, which reaches the peak of the crater, you need to take the cable-car as far as the upper station. From there, the real excursion start. The path is named after the Camino Belvedere de la Fortaleza. It is characterised by the beauty of its landscape but keep in mind that it is rather hard! The height and the strong smell of sulphur from the active fumaroles can be very unpleasant and make the descent difficult. For these reasons it is necessary to be aware of one’s abilities and be careful. To get to the crater you need a special permit from Teide National Park authorities. Once you reach the peak, you will enjoy a wonderful view, especially if the air is clear. You will be able to see the other islands of the archipelago and Tenerife will be at your feet!
- Itinerary Belvedere de la Fortaleza, pathway number 11. This pathway reaches Belvedere de la Fortaleza. It goes towards northeast and follows one of the most beautiful sides of Mount Teide. From here you can see the volcanic cone, slopes of Montaña Blanca and the remains of the past lava flows. Once you reach Belvedere, you can see all the northern part of the island from above. This pathway is not very difficult, but the remarkable height can affect your stamina. Be careful!
- Itinerary Belvedere Pico Viejo, pathway number 12. This pathway is quite flat and frequented, it leads to the western part of Pilon, from where you can see the crater of Montaña Chahorra, known as Pico Viejo. The path is a beautiful viewpoint facing the southern part of the island. Here you can see the shape of the great caldera and the vertical rocky sides which form its border. Among these rocky sides, you can distinguish Montaña Guajara.
- The most comfortable way to visit Mount Teide: the cable-car. If you want to enjoy the beauty of Teide without testing your physical training, you can take the cable-car that will lead you almost to the peak in twenty minutes. You can buy a ticket once you arrive, but we strongly recommend purchasing it in advance. You will have different options: you can stop in La Rambleta, close to the station and enjoy the beautiful panorama, you can sleep at the lodge and climb Mount Teide in the morning to enjoy the view of the crater at dawn (if you descend before 9 o’clock you will not need any permits to reach the peak) or you can continue as far as the crater (if you asked for the special permit in advance).
These are only a few options. The network is well organised and looked after by the authorities responsible for Teide National Park. In order to get more information, go and visit one of the offices of the park, check the website or contact one of the agencies organising excursions.
Do it yourself excursion
Climbing Mount Teide independently is not recommended, but you can do it anyway. You need to get ready in time and choose your route and your goals according to your physical training.
As Mount Teide is located inside a National Park, the access to its peak is not free. You must obtain a special permit. If you take part in an organized excursion, the agency will provide all the necessary permits and authorisations. If you decide to organise your excursion independently and you forget to get a permit, you will have to stop at the terrace where the cable-car stops. To obtain a special permit, you must visit the website of Teide National Park. It is free of charge, but you will have to ask for it in time or you might need to contact a tour operator to solve the problem.
We recommend the tour operator Volcano Teide Experience located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in c. San Francisco 5, 4th floor, 38002.
The permit will allow you to spend no more than two hours on top, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The access to Mount Teide is free between 5 p.m. and 9 a.m.
Night excursion on Mount Teide
Night excursions are highly recommended since they are very evocative. You will have the best experience if you rely on a professional tour. There are many different options to choose from.
One of these will guide you to Cañadas del Teide, from where you can enjoy the beauty of the sky, passing through a narrow mountain track, accompanied by an expert guide of Teide National Park. The Park is free from light pollution so you can enjoy a unique experience: the night sky of Cañadas del Teide is full of stars.
Some excursions offer the opportunity to use telescopes to observe the stars and include drinks and a three-course meal.
If you decide to spend the night at Refugio de Altavista, close to the cable-car station, you can admire the evocative sky of Teide at night. This the simplest option, meeting all needs and desires, that you can organize independently.
Teide National Park offers different options for those who love to be in touch with nature.
This is the most ecological way to experience this wonderful environment. You can choose from a great variety of agencies which organise excursions regularly to enjoy a sustainable holiday!
Quad bike tour
Those who are looking for a more comfortable experience can explore the territory and reach the top by quad bike. The experience starts in the morning and ends in the evening, after having enjoyed the evocative beauty of the surroundings.
You can reach Mount Teide by cable-car. You will find the lower station at 2,356 meters of height. The route ends at the station of La Rambleta at 3,555 meters of height. The prices of the tickets vary for tourists and residents. Many organised excursions offer this opportunity.
Whatever option you choose, we recommend that you choose your equipment carefully. Bring enough water and energy food (for example dried fruit), wear comfortable trekking shoes and bring a raincoat and some warm clothes: the weather changes quickly in this area and is generally cooler than the rest of the island, especially in winter.
Costs of excursions
The prices of the excursions vary according to the package you choose. They vary from 70 euros for the simplest one (which reaches the crater) to 500 euros for the VIP package (this includes a private excursion with a specialised guide, a night at the lodge of Altavista and a ticket for the cable-car).
There are so many options to choose from that you will find the perfect solution for you!
