The beach of Las Galletas, better known as Playa Las Galletas, is in Arona, in Tenerife, only 15 km far from Los Cristianos, Las Americas and other touristic districts and it is easy to reach from the airport of Tenerife South.
Even if it is located close to the touristic heart of Tenerife, the atmosphere surrounding this beautiful beach is enchanting and authentic, in the middle of a picturesque fishermen’s village. The dark sand of the beach is of volcanic origin. In Lonja de Pescado you will find the boats of fishermen from where, at the end of the day, you can buy some fresh fish.
Las Galletas offers also a very well-equipped beach, ideal for water sports. Nearby you will find a great variety of restaurants to enjoy tasty fish dishes.
Las Galletas: its beaches and sea
The sand of Las Galletas is black and mixed with pebbles. The sandy shore is 420 meters long and 27 meters wide and the waters are warm and crystal-clear. On the beach you will find many beach resorts equipped with showers, dressing rooms, bars, restaurants, public phones. You can rent beach umbrellas, beach chairs and boats.
There is also a sailing club, an area dedicated to diving, rescue teams, and nautical surveillance (guaranteed by the Spanish Red Cross, which is active during the summer). Close to the beach is a large parking lot with a hundred free parking spaces.
The whole island of Tenerife has a mild, subtropical climate, all year round. Las Galletas is in the southern part of the island, where you can go to the beach and go swimming all year round.
La Costa del Silencio and Las Galletas
Close to Las Galletas, you will find Costa del Silencio, a touristic area which is named after its main characteristic. It is one of the oldest tourist resorts of Tenerife, built in the 1960s when a Spanish-Belgian joint-venture decided to realize this ambitious project. Costa del Silencio offers swimming pools, shopping malls, restaurants and bars. The two tourist destinations of Costa del Silencio and Las Galletas are connected by a pleasant sidewalk which flanks the coast. They can be considered as one since those who stay on Costa del Silencio visit Playa Las Galletas as the former has not got its own beach.
Surfing in Las Galletas of Tenerife
If you are passionate about surf, in Las Galletas you will have the opportunity to rent surfboards and other equipment as well as enrolling in a course or in a single class. Las Galletas is in the South, so the waves are calm and ideal for beginners. In the right conditions, it can be enjoyed also by those who have a medium level of proficiency in this sport.
Where to sleep in Las Galletas
The area which surrounds Las Galletas and Costa del Silencio is not among the most popular visited by tourists. As there are many new modern tourist resorts, this area has not been touristically developed. If you are on a limited budget but still want to enjoy the authentic atmosphere of the Canary Islands, have a taste of the ordinary life of Tenerife, and the contact with the locals, this is the place for you: there a lot of apartments, independent houses and hotels, which offer good service at a reasonable price. If you want to stay here, you should rent a means of transport to reach the other areas of the island.
