The Tenerife Concert Hall
If you are interested in modern architecture, you should not miss the Concert Hall of Tenerife where you can enjoy one of the beautiful shows of the programme. The auditorium was designed by Santiago Calatrava Valls between the end of the 1980s and the early 1990s, even if the procedure started in the 1970s and involved many different projects and sites.
It is located in Av de la Constitución, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital city of the Canary Islands. Its construction started in 1997 and ended when it was inaugurated on 26th September. Today it is considered the most impressive architectonical symbol of the Canary Islands and one of the most popular examples of contemporary Spanish architecture.
The 6.471m2 building is divided into two theatres and the whole structure covers an area of 23.000 m2. It has an original shape compared to traditional auditoriums since it was designed to surround the audience with the auditory sources coming from the stage.
The main theatre, called Symphony, is crowned by a dome. The dome has 1616 available seats positioned in the shape of an amphitheatre, a 16.5-meter wide and 14-meter deep stage.
The area for the orchestra was designed by Albert Blancafort and pipes from organs rise from both of its sides.
The hall of the chamber has 422 seats, and it reproduces the Symphony Hall one-to-one scale. In the hall, accessible from the two sides of the building, there is a press room, a shop and a café. In the building you will also find twelve single rooms, dressing rooms, rooms for hairdressers, make-up artists and costumes. Outside, two terraces face the sea. Since 2011, the official name has become Auditorium de Tenerife Adam Martin, after the name of the President of the Canary Islands who promoted its construction.
