The Castles of Tenerife

When you think of an island like Tenerife, you think of its sea, its beaches of Los, its incredible nightlife and its almost tropical climate. We want to tell you about…its castles.

The Canary Islands were an important halfway stop in the oceanic crossings during the past centuries, so they drew the attention of kings and pirates. The formers have always spent a lot of money to fortify strategic spots along the coastline and to defend them from the attacks of enemies and pirates.

In this article we will tell you about three castles situated in Tenerife: the castle of San Miguel, the castle of San Cristobal, and the castle of San Juan Bautista.

The origins of the Castle of San Miguel

The origins of the Castle of San Miguel

The Castle of San Miguel was built among 1575 and 1577 by order of Philip II, in order to protect the town of Garachico which was of strategic importance at the time.

Where is the castle located?

The castle is in Garachico, a small town with 5,000 inhabitants. At the time of construction, it was the capital of Tenerife and its most important port. Its strategic importance ended in 1706, with the eruption of volcano Trevejo, which destroyed the port completely, but the fortress of San Miguel is still watching over the coastline.

How to visit the castle

The castle can be visited after purchasing a ticket. Original and engaging Medieval shows are held from 7 p.m. so you will have the chance to experience an evocative atmosphere thanks to its excellent state of conservation.

The origins of the Castle of San Cristobal

This castle was built in the same period of San Miguel castle, between 1575 and 1577. Its function was to protect the bay of Santa Cruz.

Where is the castle located?

It is located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Unfortunately, there is not much left of the ancient fortress: some of the walls can be seen from the interior of Plaza de España, in an especially built tunnel. In 1928 most of the castle was destroyed to enlarge the town, in particular Plaza de España. In 2006, the ruins of the castle were discovered thanks to the excavating process, so a tunnel was built in order to protect them and make them available for tourists to visit.

How to visit the castle

To visit the castle is simple and free: you just need to get to Plaza de España in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The origins of the Castle of San Juan Bautista

Castle of San Juan Bautista

In Santa Cruz de Tenerife you can also visit the castle of San Juan Bautista, also known as Castelo Nero, which dates back to 1641.

Where is the castle located?

The castle of San Juan is in Parque Maritimo César, right behind the auditorium of Tenerife.

How to visit the castle

The interior of the castle cannot be visited. The massive external structure of this defensive fortress is definitely worth a visit!
