Tenerife: where to surf
Tenerife is a paradise for those who are passionate about water sports. It is ideal for surfing as there are spots perfect for any kind of level. Look for the perfect wave whether you are a beginner or an expert. In some area international competitions, like the World Qualifying Series are held every year.
Waves such as Spanish Left, El Conquistador, El Dedo and La Derecha are as good as those overseas.
Tips for surfing in Tenerife
If you want to surf, make sure you have the right equipment. You do not need to buy everything! Especially if you have just started!
On most of the beaches where this sport is practised, you will be able to rent all the equipment necessary. The hirer will give you some advice, taking into account your experience, your weight and your height.
As the temperatures in Tenerife are very pleasant all year around and hot during the summer, you will not need a wetsuit. In summer you can surf in a swimsuit and in winter you can use a shorty.
Beaches for surf lovers in Tenerife
In the North
The northern part of the island is as fascinating and interesting as the southern part. It is more authentic and offers fascinating and magical landscapes. The beaches in this area are made up of volcanic black sand of lava origin. Here you will find the best spots for surfing the waves such as El Callao, Igueste de San Andrés, Las Palmeras, Las Conchas and Punta Blanca.
Igueste de San Andrés (Santa Cruz de Tenerife)
This area is located north of the popular Playa de Las Teresitas. It is renown among surfers because it offers the best left hander of the whole Tenerife and the waves form huge walls, ideal for those who love this sport.
El Callao (Punta del Hidalgo)
El Callao is situated north from Costa Adeje. It offers spectacular waves up to 4 meters.
El Charco (Bajamar)
Located southern of Punta del Hidalgo, El Charco is an ideal destination for surfers both experts and beginners as you can find good surfing schools.
El Socorro (Los Realejos)
The beach of El Socorro near Orotava on the coast in the municipality of Los Realejos is a must both for surfers and those who want to spend a relaxing holiday surrounded by a wonderful natural environment.
La Caleta (Garachico)

El Médano is popular all over the world for windsurfing. The two bays of El Médano and El Cabezo are separated by a rocky peak. The area is touched by trade winds which blow more steadily and frequently in July and August.
